About The Shot – The Palisades Loop

There’s a part of the Bruce Trail that runs through a wooded area along the Niagara Escarpment just within the city limits called The Palisades Loop, and I’ve never walked it. I really don’t know why. Clearly, I need to get off my lazy ass and explore my hometown more.

I went to this spot with my wife and dog to check it out but our dog had a knee injury a while back so we cut the hike short. I will be going back, hopefully within a few days, to hike the whole loop. I’ll definitely need a full charge on my iPhone for this hike because the photo opportunities are massive through here. I’ll be taking a lot of photos and shooting some video which will result in a video/slideshow at some point.

This image is a panoramic taken on my iPhone 14 Pro Max. I wondered about the crop. I’m not keen on the tree at the far left but if I crop it off, it throws the balance of the image off. If I crop the far right to show just the small tree and not the leaves, which I really like because of the way the light is hitting them, then I think the balance goes way there too. Let me know what you think about this image. Is the crop okay? Should I recapture it when I go back? Would it look better on an overcast day? Speak up!

    1. It mostly illustrates how rugged the landscape is, but I think it’s cool how the sun lights up the area in the centre of the frame. It looks like a convoluted mess, I know, but I plan on exploring it further to find some better compositions.
